Seasonal Trends of Calcium Accumulation into Fruit in Five Apple Cultivars (Malus domestica Borkh .)

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the seasonal trends of calcium accumulation into apple fruits. The total calcium accumulation per fruit was steadily increased over the fruit growing season in ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ and ¢¥Golden Delicious¢¥, while the accumulations showed a slight increase from 40 days before harvest in ¢¥Spur EarliBlaze¢¥, and no increase from 40 days and 21 days before harvest in ¢¥Starkrimson¢¥ and ¢¥Fuji¢¥, respectively. In contrast, the fruit calcium concentration decreased along with the increase of fruit size and was low in early cultivars compared to those of late ones. The calcium concentration was the highest in core, the lowest in flesh, and intermediate in peel.
